On 4th November, the Education team of the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF) organized an engaging learning activity at Alexandra House School in Floréal. As part of the Connecting with Nature programme, the session aimed to introduce children to the unique biodiversity of Mauritius and raise awareness about the importance of conserving local wildlife.

During the activity, students were introduced to words such as endemic, native, and exotic species, helping them understand the difference between species found only in Mauritius and those that have been introduced from elsewhere. They also explored vivid pictures of several iconic Mauritian species, including the Echo Parakeet, the Mauritius Fruit Bat, and the Mauritius Kestrel, allowing them to connect visually with the wildlife they were learning about.

To reinforce their understanding in a fun and interactive way, the children participated in activities such as matching pictures of species to their correct names. This interactive approach encouraged curiosity, discussion, and teamwork, making the learning experience both enjoyable and memorable. By the end of the session, students had gained a deeper appreciation for Mauritius’ unique biodiversity and the importance of protecting it.

The Connecting with Nature Programme, sponsored by MCB Group was set up in 2020 following the Education Strategy workshop facilitated by Chester Zoo held in September 2019. The programme comprises awareness events relative to the conservation of endemic flora and fauna of Mauritius with various audiences. For example, school children get better acquainted with the biodiversity of Mauritius through presentations, discussion sessions and games. They are sensitised to the threats to the native ecosystem and learn about the problems caused by introduced invasive species.
